The Ferrari 812 Superfast is not an exaggeration by any means. It is the latest exotic sports car from the house of Ferrari and is being billed as the next favorite toy of the millionaires and billionaires.
And they might well be the only ones able to afford the car, with the price tag likely to be something upward of $300,000. Staggering? Not that much, really, if you consider its exoticness and raking among other luxury sports cars: it stands third, right behind Ferrari’s very own 488GTB and the Porsche 911 GT3/ GTS RS. Plus, it’s swanky, and it’s real, really fast.
Just how Fast is it ?
At 211 mph, Superfast does not even begin to cut it. Test drivers road tested out the Ferrari Superfast in Ferrari’s private race track that doubles as the test track located in Fiorano in Italy, and they are swearing by its superspeed; some even go as far as to call driving it akin to a skydiving experience.
And the speed is easily explained; the 812 is equipped with a 6.5-liter V-12 engine under the hood that runs on 789 horsepower.
On a metric scale, that measures up to 800 horsepower, which is denoted in the 8 in the car’s name. The overall experience is absolutely great; the car is incredibly smooth, thanks to the dual speed, seven clutched automatic that drives the rear wheels, a body that is the finest example of aerodynamics at play, resulting in minimum drag and maximum velocity, and an active diffuser.
Breaking down the Name
The name of the new car from Ferrari- which replaces the previous offering, the F12 berlinetta, is a nod to its power. As mentioned before, the 8 is a nod to the 800 horsepower engine, while the 12 is a reference to the 12 cylinder engine which helps I cutting down on fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
The Superfast, of course, is a tribute to Ferrari’s history of delivering cars with supreme speed, and to finally make good on their promise of launching a car that is fast on truly epic proportions.
What about the Engine ?
The engine in Ferrari’s Superfast car is almost completely new. Ferrari has gone truly big with this car, replacing the predecessor’s 6.3-liter engine with a 6.5 one, which can go for a minimum of 8500 rpm and a maximum of 8900 rpm. It reaches peak torque at about 530 lb-ft and plateaus at around 7000 pm.
The ride is smooth and almost without any force till the car reaches 5000 rpm, but after that, you start to feel the heat.
The sound of wind rushing past you at extreme speed would be drowned by the sensation of speed building up within as the car gains momentum as it reaches 6000 rpm at 600 horsepower, and 7000 at 700. It takes less than three seconds to go from zero to 60 mph, and you can expect to cross the quarter-mile mark in around 11 seconds. The soundtrack is amazing; it is clear Ferrari has designed the car for F1 fanatics who do not really take part in the races.
How is it Built ?
The 2018 Ferrari 812 Superfast is clearly designed for smoothness. The car weights something around 3900 pounds, with a huge 6.5-liter engine right at the nose of it, but you would hardly know that just by driving it. None of the bulk of the car can be felt once you are at the steering.
Agility is definitely the key concept here; the car feels unbelievably smooth even as it hits bumpy, uphill roads. Of course, there is a little bit is a feedback from the roads, but that is to be expected; Ferrari still has a few years to go before its wheels and steering are given a perfect finish. The body of the car is nearly completely aluminum, which might explain the lightness.
There is a smattering of carbon fiber here and there, but that is probably meant only as an aesthetic choice ad nothing of value. The rear wheel steering of the F12 has been retained, and it is the first Ferrari to get the Electric Power Steering and the Virtual Short Wheelbase 2.0 system.
Is it Comfortable ?
The car is bulky and runs at hitherto unforeseen speed, but hats off to Ferrari for making it extremely comfortable. You can safely turn off the stability control, and the car will be completely sideways, but there is almost no skidding, and the return back on four wheels on the switching on of the stability controls is smooth.
Provided you are an expert enough driver, this can certainly be your very own F1 car for your own racetrack you privately enjoy. but racecar like features aside, the Ferrari is above all a private car, and it is equally designed to be of comfort on longer journeys.
What is the EPS ?
The Ferrari 812 is the first of its kind to get the EPS. Its principal purpose is to better the drier’s experience of driving through their principal connection to the road: the steering wheel. When the car gets closer to its grip limit, the steering wheel will relay the message to the driver, in a maneuver called the Ferrari Peak performance.
The Ferrari power Oversteer will let the driver know that the car is oversteering, and will give inputs on how to realign the car. It is to be noted, however, that both these functions run supremely with the view of the driver’s experience in driving the car, without interfering with his or her control at all.
How does it look ?
Let’s discuss both the exterior and the interior.
On the outside, The Ferrari 812 Superfast is powerfully sleek. It is similar in appearance to a race car, of course’ Ferrari has not moved from its signature style. The tail is much shortened than its predecessor, which is more pleasing to the eye, and the flanks are characterized by sharply creased lines that lend the car a muscular look.
Full LED headlights are integrated into the bonnet, and the air vents wrap around the front wheel arch. The rear is fitted with four taillights, again a signature move from Ferrari. Now, let’s talk about the inside.
The cabin of the car looks incredibly sporty, even more than its predecessor. The surfaces are sleek in keeping with the exterior, and the car gives off a compact and light vibe. Overall, there is a futuristic feel to the cabin upholstery and design, and there is an understated elegance that pervades the entire car.
All said and done, however, the designers never stopped being sensible; the dashboard that is stylishly sculpted around the air vents is as useful s any other car. The cockpit is a tribute to the driver who would be sitting at the wheels; it is an amalgamation of satellite pods, steering wheel, commands, and a multitude of contrasting materials.
