Diesel Cars are almost nearing an extinction in the United States, and will slowly join the likes of tape recorders, cassette players or even landline telephones, and will stay as long-lived memories. With Electric Vehicles gaining more and more traction as every day is passing by, the days of Diesel Cars are indeed limited. Electric Vehicles are slowly becoming the sole point of research and development for various car companies out there, and as the cost of the technology will further come down, Electric Vehicles will become more affordable and ultimately replace diesel cars.
Diesel in Trucks, Not Cars
As Michelle Krebs accurately forecasted, that after the Volkswagen fiasco, it’s pretty much confirmed now that Diesel will have no more a place in the passenger car world, but still will do so inside the truck world. Every part of these words is true when you see companies like Fiat Chrysler, Ford and General Motors only selling diesel pickup trucks to make their profit, as only commercial truck buyers need that low-end torque that only the Diesel engines provide.
But when it comes to marketing Diesel Cars to the normal consumers, it has always been more difficult for car companies, as consumers mostly relate diesel cars with big, heavy trucks blowing off large amounts of black smoke into the clean air of the environment. This is one of the main reasons why Fiat Chrysler will slowly try to phase out diesel engines from their Fiat Cars by 2022, due to depletion in demand and rising in the costs of production.

It can be said that the Volkswagen debacle single-handedly killed the Diesel Car market. Volkswagen has paid more than $15 billion in settlement of various lawsuits and regulations. It is said that the soot levels from those Volkswagen Diesel engines were ten times more than what was stated in its marketing and communication materials. This itself shows the amount of damage inflicted by Volkswagen on the environment as a whole.
The main reason why diesel loving consumers bought Diesel Cars in the first place, is because of more fuel economy than petrol cars and obtaining of low-end torque. Diesel Cars like The Cruze get fuel economy of 31 MPG (Miles Per Gallon) in the city and 47 MPG in the highways, compared to 29 MPG and 40 MPG respectively, on the non-Diesel variant. The difference, as can be seen here, is quite substantial.
But a non-Diesel loving consumer will look at the price first, and that is another thing to note about, as Diesel can sometimes lead to seasonal spikes in prices – as in the state of Michigan, USA, Gasoline prices per gallon can be around $2.59, whereas Diesel would cost you $3.19, or maybe even more.
It’s pretty much conclusive as of today, that Diesel Cars will be dying a painful death when it comes to passenger cars. Consumers are becoming much more intelligent day by day – they don’t want to buy a car that will create harmful effects on the environment, or pay a premium for per gallon of Diesel. No wonder Electric Cars are getting so much exposure in today’s world.
Diesel will only continue to live within the boundaries of commercial trucks in the USA and to be honest, that’s what will keep it alive. But with Tesla coming out with all-electric Semi Trucks in the near future, we’ll have to see how that will impact the sales of Diesel Trucks as well.
